I’ve tried every Bible study method out there. S.O.A.P., verse mapping, journals with prompts asking me to list three action steps before I’d even finished reading. Every time, within a couple weeks, I’d quietly quit. Not because I stopped caring, but because it felt like homework, and I always came out of it feeling more guilty than when I started.
Here’s the problem. A lot of these methods, without meaning to, turn the Bible into a to-do list. You read a passage and the whole point becomes “what do I need to fix about myself now?” But that’s not actually the good news. Jesus already did the heaviest lifting. He finished it. If your quiet time doesn’t leave room to sit in that, you’re just grinding through spiritual chores.
So, I’m doing something simpler now. Five steps, and I call it GRACE, because that’s the whole point of the thing.
Now, here’s how it might work with Ephesians 2:4-9.
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions… it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God… not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Go: read it twice. Notice “by grace you have been saved” shows up twice. Paul’s repeating himself on purpose.
Reveal: Christ made me alive while I was dead, not almost dead, not struggling, dead. He didn’t wait for me to get my act together. He acted while I had nothing to offer.
Accept: I agree with that. I’m not saved because I’ve been doing okay lately; I’m saved because he moved when I couldn’t. Nothing to earn here, and verse nine says so directly. My job is to actually believe that instead of quietly trying to prove otherwise.
Change: because that’s true, I don’t walk into today trying to earn what’s already mine. Maybe that’s less anxiety in a hard conversation, maybe it’s dropping the performance I put on for people. Small, specific, not a resolution.
Exalt: God, thank you that this was never about what I could bring. Thank you for moving toward me when I had nothing to offer back. Help me actually live like that’s true today.
Fifteen or twenty minutes, no worksheet, no spiral. Just the text, Christ in it, and a minute to let it actually be good news.
I hope this helps you this week!
