You show up. You function. You smile. And most people who know you would never guess that nighttime is a completely different story.
But God knows. He’s seen every single night of it.
This past Sunday at Awaken Church, I felt the Holy Spirit prompt me to address something I’d never specifically preached on before… not fear in general, not anxiety as a broad topic… but night fear. The particular weight that settles on your chest the moment the lights go out. The thoughts that cycle when the house gets quiet. The dread that whispers you’re not going to be okay.
I asked anyone fighting this to raise their hand. Then I asked them to walk forward.
The response genuinely surprised me. Row after row. Young and old. People I never would have guessed. Many of them had never told a single soul.
You are not broken! You are not alone!
Psalm 127:2 says, “He gives sleep to His beloved.” Not the disciplined. Not the strong. Not the ones who have it figured out. His beloved. Sleep is something you receive, not something you earn. If you’ve been white-knuckling your way through every night, here’s the truth: God gives it. You receive it. That’s His way… the way of grace.
If you weren’t in the room Sunday, this prayer is for you. Pray it tonight. Let it be the last thing your mind rests on before your eyes close.
“Father, I bring the nighttime to You. The 2am. The racing thoughts. The dread with no name. I thank You that You never sleep, never slumber, and You’re not off duty at midnight. Jesus, You said “Come to Me, all who are weary, and I will give you rest.” Not “I might.” You will. So right now I receive it. I’m releasing every anxious thought into Your hands. I speak peace… the peace that passes all understanding… to guard my mind and heart tonight. Nighttime isn’t the enemy’s territory. It never was. It belongs to You. And Your beloved sleeps. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Night anxiety is real. You don’t have to carry it alone. And beyond prayer, here are a few simple things that might help you set the stage for rest:
