Is Your Gospel a Fake? (Here’s How to Tell in 30 Seconds)

Let me tell you about the worst best purchase I ever made.

Kim and I were in New York City for the first time, wide-eyed and loving every second of it, when a guy on Canal Street leaned in close and whispered, “You wanna buy a Louis Vuitton handbag?”

I didn’t particularly need a handbag. But then he named his price and suddenly… I needed several. We knew they were knockoffs. Obviously. But they looked incredible! We handed over the cash, walked away feeling like geniuses, and then… it rained. That bag didn’t just get wet. It basically dissolved. What looked like a luxury item turned out to be an elaborate disappointment wrapped in fake leather.

Counterfeit gospels work exactly the same way. They look like the real deal, they’ve got all the right stitching, but the moment real life shows up? They fall apart in your hands. There’s only one genuine gospel. Paul called it the gospel of grace and everything else is Canal Street. Here’s your 30-second test:

  • 1. Is it all about Jesus or all about you? Real gospel: Look at what HE did. Fake gospel: Look at what you still need to do. If every sermon sends you home with a crushing to-do list and a vague sense that God’s disappointed in you, that’s not grace. That’s a gym membership you never asked for.
  • 2. Does it actually help you beat sin? Real gospel: New creation. Clean slate. Done. Fake gospel: Try harder. Feel guilty. Rinse and repeat. Guilt isn’t transformation. Grace actually changes people from the inside out. Religion just drives the mess underground. The real gospel drags it into the light and deals with it once and for all.
  • 3. Do you have real peace or just a packed schedule? Real gospel: Rest. Joy. That deep-down can’t-explain-it overflow. Fake gospel: Busy. Striving. “I’ll rest when I get to heaven.” The Kingdom of God is supposed to feel like righteousness, peace, and joy not a hamster wheel with a cross painted on it.
  • 4. Are you actually free? Real gospel: Free. Today. Not when you die. Not when you finally get your act together. Now. Fake gospel: “Behave yourself and maybe one day God will be pleased with you.” That’s not good news, that’s a hostage situation. The real gospel rips the chains off and Jesus does the heavy lifting. That’s the whole point.

So how did your gospel do? If any of those landed uncomfortably, you might be carrying a knockoff. And I say that with zero judgment… I used to preach a counterfeit gospel, so I know what it looks like from both sides of the pulpit.

Here’s the thing though… knowing the real gospel isn’t a one-time download. It’s something you grow into, week after week, in community with other believers. That’s why being planted in a good church isn’t optional… it’s everything. A true New Covenant church exists for one reason: to unravel the fake and reveal the real, over and over again, until grace stops being a concept and starts being the air you breathe. You need people around you who keep pointing you back to Jesus, back to grace, back to the truth. Find that church. Show up every week. Your soul will thank you.

The real gospel costs nothing, lasts forever, and unlike Kim’s handbag — won’t dissolve the moment life gets hard.

That’s grace. There’s nothing else like it.
