Lessons from a Child: Understanding God’s Generosity Beyond Fear

When a 5-Year-Old Understands Something Most Adults Don’t

You ever be giving your kids life advice… and halfway through realize you’re the one who needs to hear it?

You know the parent speech:

  • “Don’t worry.”
  • “God’s got it.”
  • “Just trust the Lord.”

Meanwhile inside you’re thinking,

“Man… I should probably take my own advice.”

I’ve had that moment more times than I can count.

And if I’m honest, one of the places this shows up the most is money.

We trust God with heaven.

We trust Him with forgiveness.

We trust Him with eternity.

But when it comes to finances, suddenly we tighten up.

We stress.

We calculate.

We carry pressure God never asked us to carry.

So here are three things I’ve reminded my kids of… and sometimes have to remind myself too.

1. Look at God’s heart

If God had no hesitation giving His Son… why would He hesitate to provide for His kids?

The cross settled the generosity question forever.

God isn’t stingy.

Generosity is His nature.

2. Look at your history

Sometimes people say, “We’ve barely made it.”

Okay… but answer this honestly:

  • Did you make it?
  • Did God somehow provide again?
  • Did the bills get paid?
  • Did food show up?

Maybe not early.

Maybe not the way you expected.

But somehow… every time…

You made it.

God’s track record in your life is undefeated.

3. Pressure shows up when you try to be the provider

When you believe everything depends on you, anxiety shows up fast.

But Psalm 23 says God leads His kids to green pastures… a picture of provision and rest.

God isn’t trying to lead you into panic.

He’s leading you into trust.

And this whole thing hit me recently when a parent told me a story about their little girl during our church’s building campaign.

This kid is all in.

She’s doing chores.

Looking for coins.

Checking couch cushions.

The other day her mom walked in and she was literally trying to break open her piggy bank so she could give more.

Her mom told her to stop.

But then she told me something that stuck with me.

Watching her daughter was convicting.

Because that little girl had zero fear she would ever do without.

Why?

Because she knows she has a good parent who will always take care of her.

And honestly… that’s how sons and daughters of God are supposed to live.

Free.

Trusting.

Open-handed.

Because that little girl understands something many adults forget:

When you know your Father will always provide…

you’re free to live generous.

We exist to declare + demonstrate the gospel to everyone, everyday, everywhere.
